Whilst there are a lot of advantages of geothermal energy, like anything, there are some disadvantages of geothermal energy as well. Nobody is denying that this is a green alternative to traditional power stations and a great way to reduce a carbon foot print, but that does not mean that these stations are perfect.

One of the biggest disadvantages of geothermal energy is the barrier to entry in terms of cost. Someone wishing to invest in geothermal energy needs to have an extremely large bank account in order to fund the project. This means that a lot of potential geothermal energy stations never make it to the initial build stage.

Unlike other power stations, the geothermal energy power stations need to be situated in a certain position. For instance, they need to be placed on a location that has rock underneath that is easy to drill through. Once they drill through the rock, they need to ensure that they are near a geothermal hot spot, otherwise the whole project would have been pointless. Just getting these two things in the same place can be an extremely difficult challenge.

Here is another of the main disadvantages of geothermal energy; it can stop after time. Setting up camp for geothermal energy is not something that is always done for life time. A lot of the time the energy can stop being produced for several years on end. If this were to happen towards the start of the plant being opening, then it could mean the plant produces more pollution than what it is about to save.
